Why carriers miss this one
The MCS-150 is not due on January 1 and it is not the same date for every carrier. FMCSA spreads biennial updates across the calendar using digits from your USDOT number, so two neighboring fleets can have deadlines months apart. Miss yours and your USDOT number can be deactivated within days — often discovered when a broker runs a check.
How the digits work
The last digit sets the month: 1 = January, 2 = February, through 9 = September, and 0 = October. The second-to-last digit sets odd or even years. A USDOT ending in 64, for example, points to April of an even-numbered year.
